How to read the desk
This page walks down the desk from the top, the way you meet it, and names each part the way the desk shows it. Many labels appear in capitals on screen, and are written that way here. A dash in a cell means the desk has no value to show; the symbols table at the end lists every symbol.
1. Signing in
The first time you sign in, and again whenever its wording changes, the desk asks you to read a short disclaimer. Accept takes you to the desk. Decline signs you out. The disclaimer says that TMI is not a broker-dealer, not an investment adviser and not your fiduciary. It says the desk's grades and readings are the same for every reader and are not advice tailored to you or your circumstances. It also says every trading decision is yours, and that trading low-float small-cap equities carries a substantial risk of loss.
2. The header
The strip across the top. It tells you what time it is, what the market session is, and whether the desk's own parts are working.
| What you see | What it is |
|---|---|
The Momentum Intelligence Trading Desk |
The desk's name, top left. |
The clock and ET |
New York time, in 24-hour form, ticking each second. On wider screens the date follows. |
Closed, Premarket, Regular hours, After hours, Post-market, Next-day prep |
The session the market is in. Premarket runs 4:00 am to 9:30 am. Regular hours run from 9:30 am to the close, 4:00 pm, earlier on an early-close day. After hours runs from the close to 8:00 pm. Post-market runs 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Next-day prep runs 10:00 pm to 4:00 am. Closed is a day the market is closed. |
Market: dot |
A dot that shows whether the desk is receiving market data as it should. Green and pulsing is LIVE. Grey is closed. Blue is connecting. Amber is degraded, DATA STALE or DATA DEGRADED, meaning the connection is up but the newest data is older than it should be. Red is a fault, and the hover says which. The words show only when the state is not the one expected for the hour; otherwise you see the dot alone. Hover for the detail. |
Universe: badge |
Appears only when the list of names the desk ranks from is reduced: Universe: degraded, Universe: no wildcard or Universe: simulated. |
Research: dot |
Whether the desk's research engine is working. Green is idle and healthy. Blue is Research: working (n), with n names being analysed. Amber is Research: degraded. Red is Research: engine offline or Research: error. When names are being analysed or are waiting, a line beside it reads analyzing and their tickers, or n queued. |
Assessments: dot |
Whether the desk's scheduled assessments are running: Assessments: scheduled, Assessments: running, Assessments: error or Assessments: scheduler offline. |
Next and a time |
The time of the next scheduled checkpoint, and its name in lower case. A checkpoint is a scheduled moment when the desk takes a fresh assessment and keeps a record of the board as it stood. |
late |
Beside the last checkpoint: it ran after its scheduled time, so it records the state when it ran. |
Refresh |
Reads the desk again now. The desk also refreshes itself every few seconds. |

Free trial ends and a time |
During a free trial, a small label with the time the trial ends. |
Light or Dark |
Switches the colours. The button names the mode it will switch to. The desk starts dark and remembers your choice in this browser. |
Two lines can appear under the header. A coloured line above the board says the page cannot reach the desk, or that the desk's market data is old, and gives the time of the last update in ET. A coloured band under the header means a payment did not go through: it says when your session ends and has an Update card button.
3. The summary line
One row of counts above the board. Each number counts the names in the whole board that would remain if only that one filter were on, so the numbers do not change as you set other filters. Click a count (all but ranked) to show only those names; click it again to clear.
| Count | What it counts |
|---|---|
ranked |
Names in the ranking at the time shown. The board shows the first 12, 25 or 50 of them, plus moving names outside them, up to a limit. |
day 1 |
The move began today. |
frontside |
Still making the cycle high. |
backside |
Half the move or more given back, still in play. |
dirty float |
Structure or float reads DIRTY FLOAT. |
fresh catalyst |
The desk found a catalyst and it is FRESH: the green rows in Why. |
matching filter |
Appears only while a filter is on: how many names pass all of your filters. |
4. The filters
Beside the counts. The filters narrow the live board only; they reset when you reload the page.

All, A, B, C, D, Not graded. |
Cycle |
All, Day 1 (the move began today), Frontside (still making the cycle high), Off high (off the high, less than half the move given back), Backside (half the move or more given back, still in play). |
Structure |
All, Dirty (Dirty Float), Unknown (Unknown Structure), Other (neither Dirty Float nor Unknown Structure). |
Freshness |
All, Fresh (the catalyst is from today), Recent (from yesterday), Old (from before yesterday). |
Catalyst grade |
All, A, B, C. C includes names with no company event in the desk's evidence. |
Clear |
Appears while a filter is on and clears them all. |
While a filter is on, an amber line under the board's controls lists what is on, for example Filters on: Cycle: Day 1., says X of Y names match., and has Clear filters. A second line, Moving names these filters hide:, lists up to five moving names the filters are hiding; click a name to open it.
5. Focus
The strip above the board that holds the names you pin. Press the star beside a ticker to pin it: ☆ is not pinned and ★ is pinned. Focus holds 6 names; the header shows Focus, how many are pinned out of 6, and pinned for this session. Pins last until you reload the page. A seventh pin is refused with Focus holds 6 names. Unpin one to add another. Unpinning a name changes nothing else: it stays on the board and keeps its research.
Each card in Focus shows the ticker, price and percent change, a tag for where the price comes from, three badges (the cycle, the catalyst and the structure), RVOL, SPRD (the spread) and the nearest level above and below the price, each with its distance. A warning about the company's share structure appears on a card when the desk has one. Click a card to open the ticker.
6. The briefing line
A single line labelled Briefing, above the board. It tells you which of the day's reports is current and whether it is ready.
{Title} · {time}: the report is published, with the time it was published in ET.{Title} · due {time}: not yet due.{Title} · being checked: due, and the desk is checking it before it appears. No {title} for this session: the report did not appear. A short reason follows, for exampleNo 9:25 am ET assessment ran.orThe report could not be checked, so it is not shown.NeworRevised: a report you have not opened in this browser.Revisedmeans the 10 pm edition has a line or the summary written again.Dismissmarks it as read.late: it appeared after the time it was meant to be ready by. The reports. There are four a day:
| Title | When | Built from |
|---|---|---|
Into-the-open briefing |
9:25 am ET | the 9:25 open spike assessment |
Power-hour briefing |
2:30 pm ET | the 14:30 RTH reassessment |
After-hours briefing |
4:00 pm ET | the RTH close |
Evening briefing |
due 8:05 pm ET, meant to be published by 8:30 pm ET | the 20:05 after-hours close |
The 10 pm edition of the Evening briefing. At 10:00 pm ET the desk takes another assessment, the 22:00 recap. It does not publish a separate report. It publishes a second edition of the Evening briefing, built from the 22:00 recap, and a line at the top of that edition says what changed. Revised means the 10 pm edition differs from the first edition: a line or the summary was written again, or the summary was dropped. Published again means it did not. A name whose line was rewritten carries Line written for this edition.
7. The View selector
Below the briefing line, at the right. View is a menu of the board as it stood at each checkpoint completed today. Choose Live for the live board. Choose a checkpoint, written as {time} · {name}, to see the board frozen as it was then. A frozen board is marked Snapshot · not live, and its heading gives the checkpoint's name and time. Generated late means the checkpoint ran after its scheduled time. Back to live returns to the live board. The filters and the counts do not apply to a frozen board; the counts above it still describe the live board.
The checkpoints are scheduled, in the order of the day, all in ET: 22:00 recap at 10:00 pm; Structural refresh at 6:10 am; First market scan at 6:25 am; Premarket reassessment at 6:45 am; Late-mover scan at 7:00 am; Open spike assessment at 9:25 am; RTH reassessment every half hour from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm; RTH close at the close; 20:05 after-hours close at 8:05 pm. On an early-close day the last half-hour assessment and the close move with it.

tracked is every symbol the desk is following this session. eligible is how many of them the board can rank right now. It changes with the board, day or after hours, and with the price range you choose. On the day board, with the default range, a name needs a relative-volume figure and a price inside the range or held on the board from earlier in the session, and it must pass the desk's own check on what kind of security it is. |

- The setup grade badge:
A,B,C,DorNot graded. A dash means no grade was recorded; hover says why. Hover or click for the reading and the five criteria behind it: the cycle, the catalyst, relative volume, liquidity and share supply. The grade is the desk's own automatic reading at the checkpoint shown, the same for every reader. It is not a prediction and not advice tailored to you or your circumstances. stale: no market event for this name for a while. This is the last print, not a current one.RETAINED > $20orRETAINED < $1: the name qualified inside the price range earlier and the desk is keeping it on the board though its price has moved outside it.moving: the name is on the board for its move, not only for its RVOL rank.- In the evening, a volume such as
1.2M: shares traded since the close.
Price · Gap · VWAP
Three numbers. The first line is the last price. The second is the change from the baseline named in the header, such as PM Gap (the change from the prior session's close). VWAP is the volume-weighted average price for the session: above it, the price is above the session's average price paid. Under it, PM VWAP +$0.12 / +1.2% is the distance from VWAP. A third line, PM Move +2.3%, is the change since this session's first print. thin or ? beside it marks a first print made on few trades or an unreported trade count; not traded means the session has produced no print. BLUE SKY · prior 4.20 replaces the VWAP line when the price is above the highest prior-session high the desk holds.
RVOL (in the evening, Part)
RVOL is relative volume: this session's volume so far against the average for the same stock over the previous 20 eligible sessions. It is cumulative and does not fall within a session, so a name that ran early and stopped can still show a large number later; Now is the correction. 12.3x means 12.3 times. Part is after-hours participation: volume since the close against the same stock's average full-session volume.
Now
The count of trades in the most recent completed 10 seconds, with a small chart. The six bars are the last minute in 10-second slots, and the dots are each slot's last price. Green bars mean the price rose, red that it fell, amber that it moved no more than the spread. If the count of the live 10-second slot is missing, the column shows the last full minute instead, marked /min. A dash means nothing is measured. Now shows which names are trading heaviest right now, which is a different question from RVOL.
TMI Float
This column appears when floats are available. The header explains it: "TMI Float: shares outstanding less insider holdings, computed from SEC filings. An upper bound as of the date of the board or report, when the filings line up. The date beside the number is the filed share count's; where no date shows, it is in the hover. Where a TMI Float cannot be verified, the cell may show the company's filed share count with an icon. Nothing is subtracted from it, so it is not a TMI Float." ≤ 12.4M means no more than 12.4 million shares, as of the date of the board or report, when the filings line up. A number with sh and an icon is the company's filed share count as of its date, with no insider holdings subtracted. It is not a TMI Float. Unknown, Cannot verify and Not computed mean the desk could not produce a bound, and hover or click says why. Every popover links to Are float quotes real?.
Why
One letter and one colour. The letter is the strength of the catalyst, the news the desk found behind the move: A strong, B moderate or secondary, C weak or dilutive. The colour is how fresh it is, which is a different question: green is today or since the prior session's close, amber is older. A green A and an amber A are the same strength and different news. The age beside it, such as 12m, 16h, today or since Fri close, is how long ago. The line under it is the catalyst in a few words. Not researched and Looking for the catalyst. say the desk has no grade yet. no catalyst found means the desk searched its sources and found none for this move. old means a catalyst exists but is older than yesterday and the desk does not think it explains today's move. not the move means the analysis says the catalyst does not explain the move.
Risk
What would kill the trade, in one label.
DIRTY FLOAT: more shares can be sold than the float number says.SUPPLY OVERHEAD: shares a filing permits to be sold that are not in the float, such as registered resale stock, warrants and convertibles. Permission to sell, not evidence anyone is.STRUCTURE CAUTION: a concern found.STRUCTURE UNKNOWN: the desk looked and could not establish the structure. That is not the same as finding nothing.NO FLAG FOUND: the desk looked and found nothing, which is a result.NOT RESEARCHED,RESEARCHINGandANALYSIS FAILED: the research has not been done, is running, or did not complete.
The line under the label says why.
Cycle
Where the name sits in its own run, from daily price history.
| Badge | What it says |
|---|---|
DAY 1 |
First session of this advance, and the high is the most recent settled session. |
FRONTSIDE |
Still advancing: the high is the most recent settled session. |
OFF HIGH |
The high is an earlier session, but most of the advance is still intact. |
BACKSIDE |
Most of the advance has been given back. |
PRIOR RUN |
The run is over and the name has gone quiet. The old high is still overhead supply. |
NO RUN |
No qualifying advance on record. |
STARTED TODAY |
Today cleared the volume and advance a run needs. It may not become a DAY 1 once the session settles. |
NEW HIGH or OFF HIGH |
Shown instead of the phase when today has set the high this move is measured against: NEW HIGH when the price is within one spread of it, OFF HIGH when it is more than one spread below it. Hover shows the phase it replaces. |
Under the badge, $1.84 → $1.52 is the run's high, then the last price. A Halted badge means trading is halted; Resuming means trading is about to resume. A halt also hides the BLUE SKY line.
Under the table are the ranking's definition and, when floats and grades are shown, their definitions: the same sentences the headers carry. Daily RVOL = cumulative session volume ÷ average volume over the previous 20 eligible full sessions. High rank means abnormal participation worth investigating. It is not a trade, a catalyst, or a clean structure.
When the board is empty, it says why: Waiting for the first market payload., Market feed is not running. Discovery cannot populate until it reconnects., No session in progress. Discovery populates from 04:00 ET on {date}., Nothing has traded enough since the close to rank on after-hours participation yet. or No names currently qualify for the discovery universe.

10. Below the board
Desk Events. A running list of what the desk saw this session, one line each: the time, the ticker, a label and a message. Relevant shows the names the desk is tracking and your Focus names, plus every halt, resume, source change and assessment; All shows everything. The labels are NEW HOD (a new session high), HALT, RESUME, RVOL RANK ENTRY, AH RANK ENTRY, DISCOVERY (the name entered the tracked population), SOURCE CHANGE (new public sources for a name) and ASSESSMENT (a checkpoint was taken).
Graveyard. Closed until you open it. It lists names that dropped off the active board after going quiet. The header counts dead, revived, died 2+, running and never active. In the list, Dead for is how long since the name went quiet, Rank held is the rank it had, and Peak trades is in trades per minute. A name that came back is marked revived. running +31% means it is up that much since its latest drop. died 2× means it has gone quiet twice or more. Counts are a floor. A name that goes quiet and returns inside one minute leaves no gap to detect, so revivals are undercounted rather than over.
11. The report window
Read or Earlier today opens a report over the desk. Its heading is the report's title and the session it is for. Under it, built on names the checkpoints it was built from, written gives the time, and covers gives the price range and how many names had live trade data. Summary is a short paragraph, and the report is a list of names under headings: RECENT NEWS FOUND, SOURCES CONFLICT, OLDER OR SECONDARY NEWS, NO CATALYST FOUND IN OUR SOURCES, RESEARCH COULD NOT TELL and NOT RESEARCHED AT THIS CHECKPOINT. Each name has a card: the ticker (click to open it), the company line, a Catalyst grade, a risk label, a price path of three prices (the prior close, the high and the price at the checkpoint; in the evening reports, the after-hours high and close), and the report's sentences about it. minute data on a card means the name had no live trade feed, so the report used minute bars and a quiet sentence may mean the desk did not see its trades. Print prints the report. × closes it. At the foot, This report states no float, and the desk cannot independently verify a float for any name in it.
